György Zala (1858 – 1937) – sculptor, born in Dolnja Lendava

One of the most renowned residents of our town, the sculptor György Zala (1858-1937), was born in a middleclass family in Dolnja Lendava.

One of the most famous, hardworking and devoted sculptors at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century has embodied many heroic and at the same time tragic moments and personalities of Hungarian history.

Together with sculptors Alajos Stróbel and János Fadrusz, he raised the Hungarian sculpture on European level. In his long lasting and fruitful career, the Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth have also sat for him. He was a professor at the academy and on friendly terms with the artistic, political and social cream of the monarchy, but at the same time he remained a quiet gentleman.

His most famous work is definitely the Millennial Column on Heroes’ Square in Budapest.
